OIPA’s Sooners top Cowboys at Oklahoma Shootout

September 17, 2016
Good-natured competition has long been part of the OIPA golfing tradition, but OIPA members took it to a new level on Sept. 15 with the Oklahoma Shootout at Buffalo Rock Golf & Gun in Cushing.

The inaugural tournament pitted two-man teams of OU and OSU fans head-to-head for college loyalty bragging rights.

“We have a lot of fun at our tournaments, but this was a way to put a little more skin in the game and give our members a bit of an extra incentive,” said OIPA Vice President of Communications and Development Cody Bannister.

“It was a great time, and we think it’ll be even bigger and better next year.”

In this bedlam contest, the crimson and cream bested the orange and black, with OU teams taking 10 of the 13 head-to-head contests.

Noah Allen and Brian Simmons led the OU side with a 57.65, with Tommie Herell and Kevin Keck coming in second with a 58.5.

The top OSU finishers were Ronnie Knight and Mitchell Brown with a 59.15, followed by Michael Whitten and Marcus Jones with a 61.6.

Herell took the closest to the pin competition on No. 2, and Simmons won longest drive on No. 3.

About 60 golfers took part in the event at Buffalo Rock, the former Cushing Golf and Country Club, which was recently purchased and fully renovated by HOTCO’s David Hough.

The course is about one hour from both Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and the event is scheduled to return next year.
